Promises of God

First thing I would like to establish, is that God always speaks the truth. The following two scriptures tell us that God will not and cannot lie.

^{NU 23:19} God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a son of man, that he should change his mind.

^{HEB 6:17} Because God wanted to make the unchanging nature of his purpose very clear to the heirs of what was promised, he confirmed it with an oath. ^6:18 God did this so that, by two unchangeable things in which it is impossible for God to lie, we who have fled to take hold of the hope offered to us may be greatly encouraged.

If God cannot lie, we can be absolutely sure about his promises. There are many things God has promised us. I just want to pick out some of the ones I feel are extremely important and will really help us in our daily walk.

1. ^{RO 10:9} That if you confess with your mouth, "Jesus is Lord," and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

  This is the most important promise in the Bible, because it deals with our eternal future. If we cannot believe this, all the rest of the promises are useless.

2. ^{RO 10:11} As the Scripture says, "Anyone who trusts in him will never be put to shame.

This promise I believe explains itself. He will not let us down.

3. ^{1JN 5:14} This is the confidence we have in approaching God: that if we ask anything according to his will, he hears us.

  What does this mean, according to his will? A lot of times you hear people say that God is not answering their prayers. I think usually he is just not answering the way we would like. I know in my life looking back, there have been many times where I am later thankful that God did not answer with YES, but rather answered with NO. It is like a kid asking his Mom and Dad for things, if what he is asking is not good for him, do you think the parents should give it to him? So again it shows that God will do what is best for us.

Please read the following four promises and think about them for a few minutes:

1. ^{JER 32:17} "Ah, Sovereign LORD, you have made the heavens and the earth by your great power and outstretched arm. Nothing is too hard for you.

When we are told that there is nothing that is too hard for God, it should give us complete confidence in him.

2. ^{HEB 13:6} So we say with confidence, "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can man do to me?”

With God as our helper, we can handle any situation we may get into.

3. ^{PHP 4:19} And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus.

  Any need we may have will be met. What we consider a need may not be a need in God’s eyes, but anything we have to have, will be taken care of.

4. ^{RO 8:38} For I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers,  ^8:39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Even our salvation is guaranteed. Nothing can separate us from God.

How do we qualify for God’s promises?

^{We need to do our part:}

^{HEB 10:36} You need to persevere so that when you have done the will of God, you will receive what he has promised.

What is the will of God for us?

1. He wants us to receive Jesus as your Lord and Savior.
2. He wants us to follow his commandments.

So are the commandments a big list of does and don’ts? Actually there are only two. If we follow them all the rest will take care of itself.

^{MT 22:37} Jesus replied: " `Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' <sup>38</sup> This is the first and greatest commandment. <sup>39</sup> And the second is like it: `Love your neighbor as yourself.' ⁴⁰ All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two commandments."

There are many things the Bible speaks of regarding how we should live, but if you really think about it, these last four verses do cover it all.
