The Power of God

Home

I would like to talk about the power of God. What is it and how does God use it. It is something you hear a lot of talk about in Christian circles, but do we know anything about it.

Where is the first display or mention of God’s power in the Bible? It is in the very first verse. It doesn't say God's power, but to create the heavens and the earth is a great display of  God's power.

GE 1:1In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth.

Jeremiah confirms God did this in his power.

JER 10:12 But God made the earth by his power; he founded the world by his wisdom and stretched out the heavens by his understanding.

Look around you, I mean “really” look. There is evidence of God's power everywhere you look. Just look at nature or the universe. Everything works together like a fine watch. Do we really think this was an accident? The Bible says you will see God's power in what has been made.
RO 1:20 For since the creation of the world God's invisible qualities--his eternal power and divine nature--have been clearly seen, being understood from what has been made, so that men are without excuse.
To be able to see this, you have to have an open mind.
The Bible talks about the power of God in many places. Here are some examples:

The psalmist is remembering the Exodus from Egypt. Most everyone has seen the movie about Moses and the parting of the sea.

PS 66:3 Say to God, "How awesome are your deeds! So great is your power that your enemies cringe before you.

The psalmist asks God to show his power:

PS  68:28 Summon your power, O God; show us your strength, O God, as you have done before.

They had seen what God can do (Their Exodus from Egypt) and where waiting to see what he would do next.

The psalmist thinks we should proclaim God’s power. It’s that awesome.

PS 68:34 Proclaim the power of God, whose majesty is over Israel, whose power is in the skies. 35 You are awesome, O God, in your sanctuary; the God of Israel gives power and strength to his people. Praise be to God!

As you will notice something else was added in this last verse. God gives power and strength to his people. You mean we have some of God's power? Yes, he empowers us to live and live for him. I don't think he gives us power to create, but he does use us and empowers us in the things he wants us to do and succeed in..

How do we get this strength? God gives it to us and we are also taught by the Holy Spirit witch gives us strength.

JN 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

Once you experience the power of God, you want to keep it in your life. We walk our spiritual walk by faith because of what the Bible teaches, but to "experience" the power of God, as in knowing he is here with you, is like the icing on the cake. To keep it in your life you have to be committed to him. People many times are like a boat that’s not tied up, we drift. The problem with drifting is that it happens so gradual we usually don't notice it till we are way of course.

God uses us to do his work for him and he gives us power to do that. Sometime we may even perform a miracle, but it is all God, it is not us :

PS 77:14 You are the God who performs miracles; you display your power among the peoples.

Don’t mistake showmanship and hype for the power of God. There are people in Las Vegas that do “magical” things all the time and it is not the power of god.

People claim to do things thru the power of God. We have to be careful to not be mislead.

Here are two examples of the power of God from the New Testament:

Jesus birth occurred because of the power of God. Hi mother, Mary, became pregnant with Jesus super naturally.

LK 1:35 The angel answered, "The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.

Jesus after his crucifixion was raised from the dead thru God’s power.

AC2:24 But God raised him from the dead, freeing him from the agony of death, because it was impossible for death to keep its hold on him.

So what have we learned in this message, what was the point I was trying to make?

God can do anything. He has the power and will use it to help us through live. He empowers us to help others and strengthens us. It is because of his power that we can have salvation.

But it is important to read this next verse:

1CO 1:18 For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God. 19 For it is written: "I will destroy the wisdom of the wise; the intelligence of the intelligent I will frustrate."

This last verse tells you that the message of Jesus makes know sense to people that do not receive Jesus. These are the people that are perishing. But if you do receive Jesus as your personal Lord and Savior, even this is the power of God.
